How to choose a louvered pergola

Key things to decide before you order.

  • Size for the furniture

Lay out your table or seating first, then add about 3 ft on each side so people can move around under cover.

  • Freestanding or attached

Freestanding models sit anywhere in the yard on four posts. Attached models use a wall ledger and two posts, which suits a patio against the house.

  • Manual or motorized

A crank is simple and reliable. A motor, remote and optional rain sensor make it easy to adjust the roof many times a day.

  • Wind and snow ratings

Larger spans and snowy or windy areas may need more posts. Check the typical ratings on each product page against your local code.

Start by measuring the patio and checking the height under gutters or windows with our size guide. If you are torn between a pergola and a solid roof, compare shade structures side by side. Many cities require a permit for a structure anchored to a slab or footings, so read our install and permit guide before you order, and order free color samples to match your trim.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about sizing, installation and delivery.

Can I install a louvered pergola myself?

Most confident DIYers can, with two or three people over one to two days. Parts arrive pre-drilled with step-by-step instructions, and our support team can walk you through it. If you prefer, a local contractor can handle the install.

What happens when it rains?

Closed louvers overlap to shed water into the built-in gutters, which drain down through the posts. Open or tilted louvers let light and air through on dry days.

Do I need a permit?

Many cities require a permit for a freestanding or attached structure, especially if it is anchored to a slab or footing. Check with your local building department. We can provide product drawings and specs for your application.

What surface does it mount to?

Posts anchor to a concrete slab or footings. Attached models also fasten to the house with a ledger beam. Wood decks usually need added blocking or footings below.

How is it delivered?

Orders ship by freight to your driveway in the lower 48. The carrier calls ahead to schedule a delivery window.

What does the warranty cover?

Warranty terms depend on the product and component. We confirm the applicable manufacturer coverage with your order; contact us with your product and order details for help.

Can I pay over time?

Available payment methods and any installment options are shown before you place your order. Contact our team about payment arrangements for a project quote.
