Install and permits

Plan the installation for your space

Review the manual, foundation, crew and equipment your product needs. Confirm document availability, electrical requirements and local approvals before you order or begin work.

Do it yourself or hire a pro

Choose after reviewing your product's instructions and the requirements at your installation address.

Do it yourself

Build it with a friend

Ask for the current manual and assess the required skills, lifting equipment and crew. DIY suitability varies by model, configuration and site.

Confirm before ordering

  • The exact parts and hardware included with your configuration
  • Package dimensions and weights, handling equipment and crew
  • Current English-language installation and operating instructions
  • Project-specific base plates, anchors and foundation design

Discuss tools and site preparation

  • Use the tools and access equipment specified in the product manual
  • Imported hardware may require metric sockets and hex keys
  • Review lifting and working-at-height arrangements with your installer
  • Confirm foundation, drainage and utility locations before work
  • Arrange qualified electrical work where required
  • Follow the product instructions and applicable site requirements
Hire a pro

Let a local installer handle it

Ask a qualified local contractor to assess the site, installation scope and schedule. Agree on permit responsibilities and delivery arrangements before work begins.

What a pro typically handles

  • Site check, layout and permit application
  • Concrete footings or slab anchoring
  • Assembly and roof installation, with qualified electrical work arranged separately where required
  • Final inspection with your building department

How we help

  • Referrals to installers in our network where available
  • Review of available product documents and any US engineering needed
  • Installation questions answered through our contact form

Installation steps

The same five stages apply to pergolas, patio covers and carports. Your manual has the details for your model.

  1. 1

    Plan and check permits

Confirm your size and location, call 811 before you dig and check what your city, county or HOA requires.

  2. 2

    Prepare footings or surface

Follow the reviewed foundation and anchoring design for your site. Confirm soil, slab and connection requirements before pouring or drilling.

  3. 3

    Assemble the frame

Stand the posts, attach the beams and square the frame. Check level before you tighten every bolt.

  4. 4

    Install the roof or louvers

Follow the model-specific instructions for louvers, panels and drainage. Arrange any electrical work using the reviewed components and requirements for your project.

  5. 5

    Finish and inspect

Fit trim caps, test the louvers and schedule a final inspection if your permit requires one.

Plan your installation schedule

Confirm timing and crew with your installer after the product, site and foundation review. General product categories do not establish an installation duration.

Allow separately for document review, permits, site preparation, concrete curing and inspections. Follow the foundation design and concrete supplier's requirements before loading the structure.

Permits

Rules are local, so the answer depends on where you live. Here is how to find out and what we can send you.

Permit rules are set by your city or county building department, and your HOA may have its own design rules on top of that. Two neighbors a mile apart can have different requirements, so check before you order.

What to ask your building department

  • How your pergola, patio cover or carport is classified and which code edition applies
  • Size, height, setbacks, easements and attachment to an existing building
  • Required wind, snow, seismic, footing and anchoring design for the installation address
  • Electrical permits and inspection for motors, lighting, controls or heaters

What Pergoset provides

Tell us the installation address and your building department's document requirements. We will confirm which supplier documents are available and whether a US engineering review or state-specific stamped drawings can be arranged, including any fees. Catalog dimensions and European supplier ratings do not establish local code compliance.

Check with your building department and HOA before you order. Pergoset cannot apply for permits on your behalf, but your installer usually can.

Documents for your permit

  • Spec sheetRequest dimensions, materials and finishes for your exact configuration.Request spec sheet
  • Engineering drawingsAsk whether US site and connection drawings are available for your jurisdiction.Request engineering drawings
  • Installation manualRequest the current English-language instructions and required tools before installation.Request installation manual
  • Wind and snow load reviewConfirm required site loads, supporting calculations and accepted documentation with your building department.Request wind and snow load review

Availability, engineering scope, fees and timing must be confirmed for your product, configuration and jurisdiction before ordering.

Review the conditions at your site

Product suitability depends on the installation address, configuration and supporting engineering. Confirm these details before ordering.

  • Sun and heat

Review shade, finish maintenance and coastal exposure for your selected product. Material grade, coating and care requirements are model-specific.

  • Wind

Site wind speed, exposure, anchoring and attachment need a project review. No general US wind-code or hurricane rating is claimed for the imported collection.

  • Snow

Ask your building department for the applicable snow-load criteria. Confirm engineering for the selected roof, span and post arrangement; no general snow-load capacity is promised.

A supplier wind class or European specification is not a US site approval. Any required engineering, permits and inspections must be resolved for your installation.

Install and permit questions

Can I install a louvered pergola myself?

Review the current manual, package weights, required crew and tools before choosing DIY installation. Motors, lighting and heaters require confirmation of the exact US electrical configuration and installation requirements. A European power specification does not establish compatibility with a US outlet.

Do I need concrete footings?

Footing and anchoring requirements depend on site loads, soil, the existing slab and the selected structure. Have the foundation and connection design reviewed for your project before ordering or pouring concrete.

Who applies for the permit?

The property owner or their authorized contractor applies. Ask your building department which documents it accepts, then confirm availability of supplier documents and any required US engineering before ordering.

What if my HOA needs to approve the design?

Ask your HOA which dimensions, drawings, finishes and other details it needs, and obtain any required approval before ordering. Confirm document and sample availability with our team.

Can you recommend an installer?

Request installation help with your ZIP code and project details. Our team can review the options available for your location.

Does installing it myself affect the warranty?

Installation requirements and warranty terms depend on the product. Ask our team for the applicable documents before choosing an installer or beginning work.
