In this design, a long backyard already had a grill and a dining table, but they sat in two separate spots with no shade over either one.
One roof over cooking and eating
A large 14 ft x 20 ft freestanding pergola brings both under one roof. The louvers tilt to follow the sun through dinner and close when a summer shower rolls through.
- Six posts to carry the longer span.
- An outdoor kitchen island along one side, clear of the table.
- A glass wind screen on the windward end to keep napkins on the table.
Planning notes
Grills need clearance from the roof, so the island sits under open louvers near the edge. A span this size usually calls for a permit and engineered footings.
With shade, light and a place to cook, dinner can move outside from spring through fall.
