Covered parking and entries: carports, awnings and canopies

Not every cover is a backyard project. A carport, a window awning or a door canopy protects the parts of your home that take the most weather, and each one installs in a weekend or less.

Carports

A flat-roof carport stands on four posts and shelters one or two cars from sun, hail and snow. A cantilever carport uses posts on one side only, which keeps car doors and the driveway edge clear.

• Measure the vehicle with doors open and add at least 2 ft on each side.
• Check clearance for roof racks and tall trucks; 8 ft is a common minimum.
• Confirm the slab or ground can take post footings where you want them.

Awnings

Fixed window awnings keep direct sun off glass and cut cooling costs. Retractable awnings over a patio give shade when you want it and roll away for sun or storms.

Door and entry canopies

A canopy over the front or side door keeps you dry while you find your keys and protects the door finish. Glass canopies let light through; solid aluminum ones hide gutters and fixings.
